Overview

All human failings are simply engineering challenges crying out to be solved. We're machines, and the sooner we recognize that, the sooner we'll reach our true potential.
—D.A. Sinclair in "You Look Kinda Dead"

D.A. Sinclair is a minor character in Invincible. He initially debuted as a minor antagonist in Season 1, before beginning to redeem himself from Season 2 and onwards.

He is a genius who attended Upstate University thanks to a special program he was awarded with. He believes that whatever weakness a human has is an obstacle to be solved by engineering. After being taken down by Invincible when caught messing with humans and turning them into ReAnimen, he was hired by Cecil Stedman so he could create an army of them that could repel any upcoming Viltrumite invasion. Unlike his original ReAnimen, the new ones that he created working for Cecil were made using corpses instead of living people.

Appearance[]

Sinclair is a lean, young male of average height with pale light skin. He keeps his black hair at neck-length and slicked back, with a noticeable widow's peak. He has greyish-blue eyes, an Aquiline nose and a sharp chin. After his first encounter with Invincible, Sinclair's jaw had been dislocated and his nose broken. By the time Cecil recruited him to build ReAnimen in order to counter the Viltrumites he was outfitted with a neck-brace. Sinclair had a swollen mandible and left cheek, swollen nose and a left black-eye. In this condition he was unable to speak, instead grunting and giving out muffled sounds. His injuries had fully recovered after at least a month following the fight between Invincible and Omni-Man.

Sinclair dresses in greyish-mauve business clothes, consisting of a suit jacket, with a mauve tie, trousers and laced shoes. He wears a white undershirt underneath the jacket. While performing surgery in his underground laboratory, he wore a lab apron, plastic gloves and a doctor's cap over his civilian attire. While operating in the GDA laboratories his surgery clothes were a white lab jacket, a blue undershirt with a high collar and hood, blue gloves and a pair of yellow goggles.

Personality[]

D.A. Sinclair is strictly devoted to his experiments, believing them to be the best solution towards overcoming all of humanity's weaknesses and shortcomings. His belief makes him come across as narrow-minded, dismissive and highly insulting towards anyone who disagrees with him. This is shown during his introduction, wherein he berated a professor during a lecture on human health. Afterword, he referred to the university students as idiots and boasted about his higher intellect. He doesn't take criticism from anyone, as he ardently defended his inhuman research from William, feeling insulted for being viewed, in his mind, by others as a monster. Sinclair, contrary to his own opinion of himself, is delusional and sociopathic in his actions. He disregards the autonomy and choices of others by resorting to kidnapping and operating on random college students. Seeing one of his ReAnimen commit suicide did not shock him, but rather saw it as a learning experience on how to surgically make them more docile. On a lighter note, he was taken aback when William mentioned his sexual encounters with Rick, illustrating Sinclair's boundaries on personal intimacy.

Trivia[]

  • D.A. Sinclair's appearance resembles that of the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood character Solf J. Kimblee.
  • In the wake of several allegations and controversies with Ezra Miller from 2022 & 2023, it would seem they wouldn't return to play Sinclair.[1]
    • In 2024, it was confirmed by IMDB, that Sinclair will instead be voiced by Eric Bauza[2].
  • D.A Sinclair is the second antagonist in Invincible to work for/with Cecil Stedman, the first being Omni-Man.
  • D.A. Sinclair shares some similarities with the Mauler Twins, namely how all three criminals are scientists committing crimes for the pursuit of their respective fields. Sinclair, much like the Maulers, is an accomplished engineer and a skilled surgeon. Unlike the Maulers, who harm and kill only if no other options are available, Sinclair has no such restrictions. Likewise, the Maulers are adept fighters with superhuman abilities while Sinclair is an ordinary human who uses his creations as his means of attack.
    • Another key difference between him and the Maulers is that Sinclair was recruited by the G.D.A. to help them, much to his convenience in being able to continue his work. In contrast the Maulers have always been arrested by the G.D.A. and they always end up regretting using their knowledge for other people.
  • Like most characters in the Invincible universe, D.A. Sinclair shares similarities to other fictional characters. His background as a university student turned mad-scientist and his experimentation on reanimating human beings resemble that of Victor Frankenstein and Herbert West from both characters respective novels and film adaptations.
  • Elements of D.A Sinclair are also similar to Mr. Sinister of the Marvel Comics and Baxter Stockman of the TMNT series.
