A city is destroyed

A city is destroyed

Conquest and Invincible engage in a fierce battle across the city. Throughout the fight Conquest, a brutal warmonger admits rather than an ambassador of the Viltrum Empire, is wanting to fight a warrior, a challenger who can bring the satisfaction he deserves, Invincible manages to pique his interest as they fight more throughout, in one occasion in space, makes Conquest disturbingly pleased, then hits Mark into more buildings, as the fight is broadcast on television. Oliver sees and rushes to assist his older brother in the fight.

In another city, Conquest slams Invincible so hard that the city implodes and collapses within, Oliver arrives to help but is unable to keep up, as the fight is moving so fast even for him.

Invincible is continued to be flown into more buildings and an oil truck. Unable to get his bearings, as a last resort, tries to plead with Conquest to stop, but he pleas fall on death ears as he continues to reletenssely assault Invincible.

That is until Oliver arrives with a heavy uppercut, but is slapped to the ground, and grabbed by the leg. Suddenly saved by Invincible who "once again" ushers Oliver to leave, Oliver denies it as they take him on, calling Conquest old, however they soon learn that Conquest is stronger than he lets on, as he continues the pressure on Invincible, commanding Mark to reveal his Viltrumite blood and fight him. Mark, quickly gets up, and begins to hit Conquest over and over, only to tire out. Oliver returns with a double kick, but is severely battered by Conquest and nearly killed when Conquest starts to stretch his body to its limit. Invincible saves him just in time and the two fight once more, as Cecil and the GDA arrive and learn Eve has awakened.

After waking up in the hospital, Atom Eve learns of Mark’s dire situation and joins the fray, despite Cecil’s cautionary advice regarding Conquest’s lethal strength. The confrontation escalates as Conquest devastates the cityscape, mercilessly battering Mark along urban streets and coastal areas and killing hundreds of civilians. Eve arrives soon after, Although Eve initially holds her ground, she eventually becomes exhausted as Conquest adapts to her movements and breaks through her armor piece by piece, and then delivers devastating blows to Eve's face and abdomen, nearly killing her.

Conquest takes notice of Eve's passion and finds it elegant but wasteful as he drops her body to the ground.

Invincible (who was unable to help as his leg was dislocated from a chop by Conquest) flies and catches a fatally wounded Eve, with a fractured jaw and a hole through her abdomen from Conquest's punches. As Eve cries, Invincible descends to the ground.

Unable to do anything but try to keep her from talking, Mark hysterically pleads for Cecil's help, Conquest watches from afar admiring the blood of Atom Eve, and Invincible's passion for her even taking a cue from his days on Viltrum that such bonds were mythological.

Invincible and Conquest smash their arms!

Invincible and Conquest smash their arms!

Invincible watches as Atom Eve's life fades away, as Conquest monologues once more and thanking Invincible for allowing to finally cut loose. With nothing left to lose, the situation is now on a no holds barred as Mark says to him: "I don't care how fast you are, how strong you are, I can see the Future, you don't live to see tomorrow" as Invincible's death threat and determined promise to kill Conquest. Conquest mocks Mark for thinking he can threaten him; the two charge at each other and. in the blink of an eye. shatter their arms.

Invincible manages to get the upper hand. Meanwhile, Atom Eve's body emits a pinkish transparent aura that repairs her leg, stomach and face, Invincible continues punching Conquest, screaming at him to die, until he notices an immense light from Eve, which distracts him and allows Conquest to pin him down, that is until Eve reemerges to deliver a massive energy blast that damages Conquest’s skin, weakening him enough for Mark, with both arms crippled, to finish him with multiple headbutts, which appear to be lethal. Invincible crawls to his lover, as the two say they love each other and finally pass out.

The Guardians, Tech Jacket, Capes Inc., and the GDA arrive, while Cecil notices Conquest's mangled corpse.

Mark and Eve finally rest after both the Invincible War and Conquest's arrival.

Trivia[]

"I Thought You'd Never Shut Up!" - Invincible, Invincible #68

"I Thought You'd Never Shut Up!" - Invincible, Invincible #68

  • The title of this episode is in reference to Invincible #68, where Mark says this to Dinosaurus after the latter finishes his rant.
    • Worth noting is that unlike most episodes, the context for this episode's title has almost nothing to do with the episode itself. It's speculated that the reason for this was to avoid spoiling the magnitude of the battle.
  • This is one of the few episode title cards that does not feature a character mentioning Invincible's name or building up to his name, instead the title card is oddly introduced right after the recap.
  • The version of this fight from the show deviates considerably from the comics.
    • In the show, the fight is largely more brutal. Whereas the comics mostly avoided civilian casualties, Conquest in a display of "educative" action deliberately targeted populated areas, using his speed to indiscriminately annihilate men, women, children, and pets in his path as he dragged Mark along for his battle in the show.
      • This draws heavy comparisons to Nolan's attempts to "educate" Mark by showing the fragility of human life.
    • This episode can also be considered an homage to the Season 1 finale:
      • Elements like when Conquest and Invincible arrive in a small town, he uses Invincible as a shield to kill innocents, which is nearly similar to when Nolan used Mark's like a battering ram on a train. Even when Invincible puts Conquest on the ground and even threatens Conquest when head-butting him is similar to how Nolan was beating Mark to death in Mount Everest and exclaiming how he would make another kid again. Also the fact that other super heroes (excluding Atom Eve and Kid-Omni-Man), and the GDA didn't assist him similar to the beginning of Where I Really Come From.
    • The brief moment where Conquest confides in Mark his loneliness and sorrow was not adapted from the comics and is a unique revelation exclusive to the series.
    • Conquest also mentions all of the Viltrumites fear his immense power and strength.
    • Conquest mentions his own experiences with Nolan, admitting he showed promise for future Viltrumites to come along with hinting at his "supposed death", but neither he or Mark are aware that it was averted.
  • During the fight, Mark suffers from a real-world phenomenon known as hysterical strength, wherein a person's body endures very brief bouts of extreme strength while suffering from a surplus of adrenaline. Conquest specifically makes a point to rebuke the notion, stating "Getting mad doesn't make you stronger!" only to very quickly be proven wrong.
    • This anecdote lends credence to a popular, yet never-confirmed fan theory that pure-blooded Viltrumites either don't produce adrenaline, or don't produce enough of it to gain its benefits, and Mark's innate ability to grow stronger being due to his human DNA granting him said adrenaline.
  • There are brief sections of the fight where the animation quality noticeably improves over the rest of the episode, the season at large, and the series as a whole.
    • This spawned the somewhat niche "Mark's Hair" meme, where in comparison to the animation across the rest of the season, which was criticized by fans, Mark's hair is shown moving with impressive fluidity after taking a hit from Conquest.
  • This episode has spawned more popular memes ones like Sea SALT I Need you SEE SALT, I'm So Lonely, and Big Ass Beat Down coming up have spawned endless art and parodies online.
  • This episode is one of the few to pick up immediately where the previous episode leaves off (along with Where I Really Come From, It's Been a While, and It's Not That Simple). The episode, and by extension, the ending of the previous one both take place a week after the Invincible War.
  • Similar to the battle against Omni-Man in Where I Really Come From, Conquest's fight with Mark spawned a litany of memes, primarily derived from his memorable quotes, including "Stand ready for my arrival, worm!", "You were given orders, you were given time. You were given more leeway than most and yet I find this planet unprepared for the arrival of our Viltrum Empire.", alongside his "I'm so lonely..." monologue, and his fatigued "I take the good with the bad." retort.
    • Additionally, the episode also spawned memes derived from Mark's quotes, such as "CECIL! I NEED YOU, CECIL!" and "I don't care how strong you are. I don't care how fast you are. I can see the future: You don't live to see tomorrow." And while not a quote, the above-mentioned "Mark's Hair" meme is also noteworthy.
  • Cecil lying to Mark about Conquest's corpse is contrary to Cecil admitting to Nolan how much of a good liar he is in We Need to Talk.
  • Damien Darkblood makes his first appearance since Neil Armstrong, Eat Your Heart Out. This reappearance never occurred in the comics, making it the first wholly unique subplot in the series.
  • The pentagram that Darkblood draws in the dirt and activates with a press of his hand to summon the Great Beast appears very similar to Glyphs from the American animated fantasy series The Owl House, created by Dana Terrace and premiering on Disney Channel.
  • There leak prior to the season's release that indicated that Eve's powers have malfunctioned. The comics stated it was Eve getting killed by Conquest that caused it.
  • Rudy changing his first name to Rex ties into his adult appearance during the previous season's finale episode.
  • Amanda says "I love you... Rex." to Rudy, acknowledging they are now a couple.
  • D.A Sinclair is revealed to have a girlfriend named Justine.
  • The corpses of several Evil Invincibles, killed during the Invincible War, are shown to have been acquired by the GDA during and after the Conquest fight. The visible ones are:
  • Originally the Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire was meant to appear in this episode, but was scrapped most likely due to time constraints. However it was confirmed on Twitter that the Grand Regent will debut finally in the following season.
  • Robert Kirkman has stated in an interview that he wanted to bring Damien Darkblood back at some point. He also lamented the fact that he never penned a story where a hero goes to Hell and fights "the devil", and may potentially be using the show as a second chance to do just that.[1]
  • This episode currently has a 9.9 rating on IMDb, making it the highest rated episode of the entire series, and one of the highest rated episodes of any show on the site.
    • The episode initially had a perfect 10, which tied it with the Breaking Bad episode, Ozymandias, for the highest rated TV episode on the site.
