History

Golden Age of Viltrum

I am the only Viltrumite to ever rebel against the empire.
Thaedus reveals his true origins as the Great Betrayer of Viltrum to Allen in "This Must Come as a Shock"

Argall's Wisdom

The records of the Viltrumites' pre-rise to power are largely ambiguous. Even though at a some point, they had human-like lifespans, they later evolved into near-godlike immortals, with many living for thousands of years on their home planet, Viltrum. At some point in their ancient history, the Viltrumites adopted a eugenic philosophy. In order to preserve their genetic purity, any attempt to betray this sacred rule was met with swift execution.

Viltrumite Argall Era

Under Argall's reign and wisdom, Viltrum became an unrivalled paradise of strength in its history.

Under the leadership of the first Emperor, the wise and powerful Argall, and his most trusted subordinates, the Viltrumite Council, Viltrum civilization evolved beyond the normal capabilities of other worlds; they established tall skyscrapers and cityscapes that towered over the cities of different worlds. The Viltrumites also created sophisticated space transports, for the purpose of space travel and invented medical technologies that far exceeded any other known alien worlds, successfully producing cures to end famine, incurable diseases, and other known fatal scourges in the galaxy. They repaired their planet's global climate, ensuring it remained a paradise of strength for its inhabitants. It became an era of unrivaled prosperity for the Empire.

The Great Betrayal

Thaedus The Great Betrayer

By killing Argall, Thaedus became the first Viltrumite in history to ever rebel against the Empire.

Everything changed upon the betrayal of Thaedus, who recognized the heinous ways of his people and became the first Viltrumite to ever oppose the Empire. He killed the first Emperor prior to fleeing from the home planet to evade execution. The truth of the sovereign's death was strictly kept hidden by his most trusted subordinates to cover up the betrayal of a fellow Viltrumite from the Empire and ensure this historical cataclysmic betrayal would not be repeated. Those who knew the truth secretly labeled Thaedus as the Empire's most wanted criminal.

Addition by Subtraction

We have created a perfect civilization, but it took all of our strength, determination, and courage to get there. In order for our people to reach their full potential, we had to remove the weak from our society. It was a long and difficult process. When it was over, our population was cut in half, but what emerged from the ashes was unstoppable.
Omni-Man elaborates on how Viltrum was "reborn" to Invincible in "Where I Really Come From"

The Purge Ignited

Great Purge

Conquest and Thula are among the survivors of the Great Purge.

With the death of their ruler and his heirs missing, the Viltrumites entered an era of civil unrest. For many years, the Viltrumites were largely confined to their own planet, too busy dealing with their own internal problems to be concerned with anything else. In accordance to their Darwinistic beliefs, they decreed that only the strongest should be allowed to live, and so they decided to “purge the weak” from their society in what would come to be known as the Great Purge, for the sole purpose of attempting to recreate their once-perfect civilization.

A New Empire

File:Thragg Appointed Grand Regent.png

Thragg is appointed Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire.

This ignited a savage and bloody planet-wide civil war among all Viltrumites, which resulted in their global population being halved, while also leading to the emergence of a new militaristic society of strong, formidable warriors. Soon, renovation began as the remaining Viltrumites unitedly aided in rebuilding their devastated planet's cities. Still leaderless, the Council chose Thragg, who had been raised from birth to become the strongest of their kind, to lead the empire in his official role as Grand Regent. He was given the imperative task of avenging Argall's murder by hunting down and killing The Great Betrayer, Thaedus, while also seeking the late monarch's long-lost true heir.

Newfound Destiny

By the time I was born, Viltrum was already the greatest empire in our galaxy. We decided to make it the only empire in our galaxy.
Nolan elaborates on the Viltrumite Expansion to Invincible in "Where I Really Come From"

The Expansion Begins

Viltrumite Warships

The Viltrum Empire's Expansion begins to spread throughout countless galaxies.

Convinced of their natural supremacy over all other races, the Viltrumites decided to make the new Viltrum Empire the only empire in the widely known galaxy. Before long, countless fleets of warships carrying legions of super-powerful Viltrumites embarked into the galaxy in all directions as part of the Viltrumite expansion campaign; they began conquering any useful or worthwhile planets in their path and adding them to their territory. On their never-ending mission of manifest destiny, the Viltrumites uplifted countless worlds across numerous galaxies by offering them advanced medical technology and eliminating any and all global conflicts or disadvantages, such as war, disease, and famine. However, because the Viltrumites demanded unwavering loyalty from their subjugated worlds, some species resisted and refused the takeover.

Viltrumite Hunting Party on Unopia

Viltrumites launch their attack on Unopa and its inhabitants.

To that end, the Viltrumites had purged the species that refused to be a part of their Empire, either through global genocide or by obliterating the species' planet. One particular species, the Unopans, had their home planet destroyed by the Viltrumites after refusing to join the Viltrum Empire. With no world of their own, the Unopans were forced to create breeding camps in order to maintain their numbers and to produce warriors who could match the Viltrumites in strength.

Allen's 1st Defeat

Allen of Unopa's first defeat against the Viltrumites.

At the same time, the now space-faring Unopans joined the Coalition of Planets, formed by Thaedus, in an effort to finally stop the Viltrumite campaign. With their combined efforts, they successfully managed to create a warrior to combat the Viltrumites: the Unopan soldier Allen. Despite this, even he wasn't nearly strong enough to match a single Viltrumite in combat; instead, Allen was employed to act as an official evaluation officer for the coalition, to report all known Viltrumite activities to any and all documented worlds that are scheduled to be conquered.

Uncovered Threats

Rognarr Attacking Nolan

A Rognarr nearly kills Nolan.

Following the Scourge Virus, while exploring the barren Savage Planet for useable resources, the Viltrumites encountered its indigenous population, the Rognarrs, whose strength and endurance surpassed theirs, as displayed when one swiftly dispatched a scout soldier. In the coming years, many agents tried and could not capture or eliminate even a single Rognarr, including a weakened Conquest who went to the Savage Planet, where he became a victim of the Rognarrs; his body heavily damaged, leading to a scarred, blind right eye and a cybernetic arm to take the place of his lost limb. Recognizing the threat they represented to their Empire, the Viltrumites ultimately chose to position a gigantic solar disk in front of the sun, which completely froze both the sun and the Rognarr beings.

SpaceRacer1

Speculations about Space Racer turned him into a primary target for the Empire.

Eventually, the Empire heard rumors of the legendary space nomad, Space Racer, whose signature weapon, the Infinity Ray, was capable of piercing a Viltrumite's flesh and effectively killing them. Intrigued and concerned about the possible threat he might pose to their mission, the Empire sent Nolan, a high-ranking soldier of the Empire, to confirm and eliminate the Space Racer. The outcome of this encounter remains unknown, but evidently, "The Great Nolan" survived the encounter, leaving the current status of the space nomad a mystery to this day.

Unorthodox Expedience

Viltrumite High Ranking Commanders

Three Viltrumite councilors debate on new unorthodox methods of conquering planets.

Ultimately, the Viltrum Empire expanded to include thousands of planets; nonetheless, as it extended even further, the Viltrumites began to show signs of strain. Their armed forces, while impressive, became precariously stretched as the population was insufficient to provide a continuous influx of manpower, especially given their rate of reproduction. Consequently, the Viltrumite Council chose to halt the expansion and explore more effective strategies for extensive intergalactic control. To avoid the expense of a full-scale invasion of multiple target planets, it was determined that their most trusted military agents would be assigned a planet to infiltrate and sufficiently weaken to enable an effortless takeover. A specific target planet was the distant, primitive planet Earth, where the predominant population was found to be almost genetically similar to their own race, potentially aiding in restoring their population via breeding facilities.

Viltrumite of Earth

I'm a good liar. I'm a very good liar, but you, you're better. You fooled her. Hell, you fooled all of us for what, 20 years?

Arrival on Earth

Nolan saving Debbie

Nolan begins his patriotic mission on Earth.

Assigned to Earth, Nolan, one of the Empire's greatest warriors, traveled to the planet sometime in 2002, where he created a new life and adopted the secret identity of a best-selling author named Nolan Grayson. To hide his true agenda, he presented himself as a "superhero" called Omni-Man and aligned himself with the original Guardians of the Globe and the Global Defense Agency to gain their trust and study both their strengths and weaknesses. Refusing to officially join the Guardians, Nolan instead agreed to become "reserved help" whenever they required his aid. A few short years after arriving on Earth, Nolan married a human woman he saved named Debbie, and together they had a hybrid son named Mark Grayson. Nolan would tell Mark false stories about the Viltrumite's intentions (such as him being a part of a "world betterment committee") until he had his powers to guarantee his son was on his side when the time came for them to conquer the primitve planet for the Empire.

The Truth

Omni-Man wounded after killing spree

Omni-Man succeeds in brutally slaughtering the original Guardians of the Globe.

Twenty years after arriving on Earth, Nolan, as Omni-Man, became recognized as its "greatest superhero" when he discovered his son's powers had awakened. He swiftly began eliminating potential threats to Viltrum's rule, beginning with the Guardians, whom he massacred in their headquarters. Not long after, he framed demon detective Damien Darkblood for the murders. Ultimately, when the truth began to emerge, Nolan sought out his son Mark (who had become the superhero known as Invincible), which led to a heated battle with the G.D.A.'s Director Cecil Stedman's advanced forces. At the same time, The Immortal was brought back to life by the Mauler Twins, and he immediately went after Nolan to kill him.

Nolan fights Mark

Invincible battles his father to protect Earth and its population.

Arriving at the battlefield, he and Nolan fought and despite his best efforts, he was killed by Nolan again, but not without revealing to the entire world, including his son, his true persona. Concerned, Mark falsely believed his father was being mind-controlled until Nolan finally admitted to his son, that he was completely aware of his actions and of his true origins as a Viltrumite. Nolan tried convincing Mark to aid him in conquering Earth for Viltrum, but Mark was adamant in his decision to protect Earth from the upcoming Viltrumite invasion, despite the mentioned benefits it would bring to Earth's population in the long run. As a result, a world-changing battle between father and son erupted, which destroyed most of Chicago and killed an untold number of civilians and soldiers in both the city and on Mount Everest in the process.

Remedying Treason

Kregg: My name is General Kregg. You've survived your first true battle in proving yourself worthy of your Viltrumite heritage.
Mark: Go f*** yours... (Kregg punches Mark)
Kregg: Your father will be executed, and you will return to Earth. You will assume his mission and prepare the planet for our rule. I know this may not appeal to you, given your sympathies, so I'll put it like this. You can kill a few humans to convince them to capitulate, or we will kill millions if we arrive to find you or your planet still defiant against us. We will check on your progress soon. And unlike your father, we do not change our minds. Good luck on your mission.

Battle of Thraxa

Nolan Leaves Earth

Unwilling to kill his son, Nolan abandons his mission on Earth.

Unwilling to kill his son, the emotionally traumatized Viltrumite spy abandoned his post on Earth. After months of wandering aimlessly across the universe, Nolan found his way to Thraxa, where its population made him their emperor due to his heroism toward them. At the same time, three Viltrumite soldiers were tasked with tracking the traitor down after learning from their spy inside the Coalition of Planets that not only did Nolan abandon his mission, but that he also sired a hybrid heir with a human woman. After failing to obtain any information from the Unopan Allen regarding Nolan's present location and to verify Mark's existence, the three soldiers persisted in their search throughout the known galaxies, but not before brutally hospitalizing Allen for his defiance.

Kregg "Recruits" Invincible

Kregg "recruits" and orders Invincible to prepare Earth to be part of the Viltrum Empire.

They soon found him on Thraxa, where they decimated a number of the populace in search of both Nolan and his son, Mark, who had been brought to the planet in order to help his father protect his newborn younger half-brother, one that Nolan had sired with one of the Thraxans he saved. The Viltrumites were interested in testing Mark's abilities to see if he was worthy of joining their Empire, and after a lengthy, gruesome battle against the Graysons, they emerged victorious. An immobilized Nolan was taken away to be healed and then executed for treason, while an injured Mark was welcomed into the Empire by high-ranking General Kregg, who forcibly assigned him his father's original task: to prepare Earth for Viltrumite rule; otherwise, they would arrive to kill millions of its population if neither he nor the planet's inhabitants were ready to capitulate.

Heralding the Storm

AnissaDominatesInvincible

Anissa tries to beat Invincible into submission.

Months after the Battle of Thraxa, under orders from General Kregg, high-ranking soldier Anissa arrived on Earth to check on the progress of Mark's mission. Failing to convince Invincible to join the Empire, even after showcasing one of the many benefits it would provide to Earth and its fragile population, Anissa attempted to beat him into submission. Knowing Mark had no chance against her, Cecil ordered him to simply pretend to comply to her demands of conquering the planet for the Empire, but he pertinaciously refused. Even on the brink of death, Invincible still remained resolute. Having no authority to kill Invincible, Anissa decided to leave but not before she heralded the arrival of another, even more powerful Viltrumite, who wouldn't be nearly as reasonable as she has been.

AnissavsAllen

Anissa defeats and captures Allen.

Anissa reported back to General Kregg's ship, where she informed him of Mark's refusal to align with the Viltrumites, declaring him to be "poisoned" like his father. While being chastised for her failure, the two then spotted Allen flying near their ship, who was also returning from his latest trip to Earth, Kregg sent her to kill him once and for all as a form of redemption. A fight ensued, but much to her bewilderment, Allen had become strong enough to make her bleed. Thus, she decided to capture the evolved Unopan in order to brutally discover the source of his new strength through the Empire's top prison scientists. Much to Anissa's ignorance, Allen allowed himself to be captured so he could rescue Nolan from his execution, having learned from his son Invincible about what had transpired on Thraxa.

Unlikely Alliance

Nolan and Allen Prison Bond

Nolan and Allen bond in prison.

After a few months of hospitalization, Nolan, a fully recovered prisoner, reunited with Allen. They had a telepathic conversation, Allen praised Nolan's heroism on Thraxa and encourages him to join the Coalition's efforts in defeating the Empire. Nolan refused, expressing empathy towards "lesser beings" and accepting his death as punishment. Despite his guilt, he realized he genuinely missed his first wife, Debbie. Nolan became concerned for his new friend, who was experimented by prison scientists to uncover the source of his strength. Allen saw this as progress in his reformation, which bolstered the Coalition cause. He relentlessly tried to recruit Nolan, but he remained resolute, which eventually led to Nolan's execution after a four-month delay but Allen refused to accept his decision.

Asteroid Prison Break

Nolan, Allen, and Battle Beast battle their Viltrumite captors.

Allen broke free and caused a disordered escape that resulted in freeing multiple inmates, including the interstellar warrior Battle Beast, to whom he promised he would battle Viltrumites to quench his thirst for battle. By harnessing their combined strength, they hastily vanquished their armed alien sentinels and advanced to Nolan's execution chamber, where a final confrontation took place. As Battle Beast fought one of the two Viltrumite executioners, Allen succeeded in reaching Nolan by having him save him from a Viltrumite; the three then teamed up to oppose their captors until Allen led the confrontation into deep space, resulting in the deaths of all the guards and allowing the trio to overcome the Viltrumite executioners.

Nolan Reveals The Secret

Nolan reveals to Allen that the Viltrumites are a dying race.

In the end, everyone was killed except for Nolan, Allen, and Battle Beast, who got lost in the depths of space amidst the battle. Following their triumph, Allen ultimately succeeded in persuading Nolan to support the Coalition cause, so he may restore his reputation with his family by demonstrating that he has changed for the better. As Allen voiced his worries about reinforcements arriving shortly, Nolan reassured him that no Viltrumite would be sent to recapture them; he disclosed to Allen the real reason behind the hold-up in his execution and the lack of reinforcements, a secret the Viltrumites had desperately attempted to conceal from the universe: they are a nearly extinct race, with less than fifty pure-blooded Viltrumites left in the universe.

Advent of Conquest

Conquest and Invincible Clash

Conquest easily overpowers and dominates Invincible.

In early 2024, several months after Anissa's reconnaissance, in the aftermath of the Invincible War, Conquest made his presence known to Invincible to confirm his allegiance and officially pass judgment on both him and the entire planet's population. Traumatized and engulfed in rage from the numerous losses he just faced, Invincible ironically shows appreciation for his arrival as he longed to strike something hard. Conquest joyfully responds to his challenge by engaging the young Viltrumite hybrid in a wide cataclysmic battle across the devastated city. Following their initial clash, Conquest reveals he possesses no genuine loyalty to the Viltrumite cause, as his only aim is to fight strong, worthy opponents fueled by his indulgent lust for blood. The battle raged on, and even with Invincible's utmost determination, Conquest turns out to be far too powerful for him. After allowing Invincible a couple of "free hits" to determine if he could truly amuse him, Conquest ceased to restrain himself.

Conquest Nearly Kills Oliver

Conquest attempts to torture Oliver to death.

Invincible was at the mercy of Conquest, who brutalized him into a gruesome mess. Invincible tried to persuade Conquest to pause the fight, but he declined, relishing the moment and menacing to kill the humans he loves to encourage Invincible to put forth more effort. Out of nowhere, Kid Omni-Man showed up to help his older sibling. As Invincible pressed Oliver to exit the battlefield, Conquest effortlessly defeated the two sons of Nolan. Conquest also disclosed to Invincible that, to his knowledge, Nolan was executed. Oliver hurried in to rescue his brother from imminent demise; consequently, Conquest chose to focus on him. After literally knocking Invincible aside, Conquest nearly killed Oliver, seizing him by the head and legs, pulling the boy to rip him apart, but was rescued by a revived Invincible. Soon after, Cecil and a paramedics team arrived to extract Oliver from the combat zone.

Conquest Nearly Kills Atom Eve

Conquest fatally impales Atom Eve with his bare hand.

As the conflict continued, Invincible observed in despair as Conquest led to the deaths of numerous innocents on a beach and in the city. Soon afterwards, a completely healed Atom Eve, who sustained injuries during the Invincible War, came to help in the battle. Intrigued by the latest arrival, Conquest directed his efforts towards eliminating her, but Invincible stepped in, causing Mark to sustain severe injuries. Conquest ridiculed Mark's kindness towards the weak. Atom Eve created a piece of armor to fight Conquest; she immobilized him in mid-air by increasing the air's density, providing her with a small edge. Nevertheless, Conquest noted that her laborious breathing wouldn't allow her to sustain this exertion for much longer. In spite of her best attempts, the veteran dismantled her armor before striking a nearly lethal blow that split Atom Eve's face in half. He then thrusted his hand into her body, stunning Invincible immensely. Invincible caught her as she fell and started crying for Cecil to assist. Conquest recognized Invincible's deep bond with Eve and the lack of similar affection in Viltrumites.

Atom Eve Incinerates Conquest

A fully powered Atom Eve virtually incinerates Conquest.

Conquest ridiculed Invincible's affection for Eve, as he grasped the reason behind Invincible's concern for humanity. At that moment, Conquest thanked him for opposing the Empire, for providing a reason to fully display his power, free from any limitations. Overcome with grief and fury at what he believed was Eve's death, Invincible swore to kill Conquest no matter the cost, which impressed him after all he had forced him to suffer. Then, he urged him to "Do His Worst". The clash continued as Invincible managed to shatter Conquest's cybernetic arm, losing his own in the effort. Invincible relentlessly attacked Conquest while the latter attempted to wrap him in a bear hug. Invincible retaliated by biting off a chunk of Conquest's flesh from his shoulder, finally starting to genuinely harm the veteran. Conquest threw him away, and he subsequently spitted out the torn flesh. As they continued their battle, Atom Eve's mental limiters were shattered, awakening her full abilities, which healed her critical injuries, and turned her into a being of pure energy. Just as he was about to slay Invincible, Atom Eve struck with such force that it burned away Conquest's skin and clothes from his body.

Invincible Nearly Kills Conquest

Conquest is head-butted to submission by Invincible.

As the Viltrumite fell, Atom Eve returned to her normal form, naked before she collapsed and lay bare on the ground. Invincible gazed at her, confused by what had just happened, while Conquest stood, his body severely injured from the blast. The Viltrumite growled menacingly, vowing to make certain she was truly dead. Enraged, Invincible ascended swiftly to shatter Conquest's jaw and he restrained him to pummel him to death with his one remaining hand. However, Conquest caught his fist with his own hand before he squeezed tightly, crushing Invincible's hand. In agony, Invincible mercilessly head-butted Conquest, asking him if he's still having fun. Even though Conquest's face was shattered, he scoffed that he embraced the good with the bad. Outraged, Invincible kept head-butting him until Conquest's skull was utterly crushed. Ultimately, concluding the battle, Invincible pulled himself over to Atom Eve just before they both lost consciousness from their overexertion.

Conquest Imprisoned

A recovering Conquest is detained by the G.D.A.

Three days later, upon regaining consciousness from his injuries at the G.D.A., a healing Invincible insisted on seeing Conquest's body to confirm his death, and Cecil relented. Upon verifying his demise, Invincible instructed Cecil to incinerate his decayed body, but Cecil misled him, as what he saw was actually a conjured imitation of Conquest's corpse. Cecil had imprisoned the real Conquest, who was severely wounded but still very much alive, in a 400-ton steel cage in the Mojave Desert, six miles below the Earth's surface, in order to obtain information about the Viltrum Empire and how to finally put an end to them.
