"You're Not Laughing Now" is the first episode of the third season of Invincible, and the seventeenth episode of the show overall.

Synopsis[]

Mark Grayson is back and stronger than ever, with new enemies out for blood and old villains out for revenge.

Plot[]

Mark undergoes rigorous training under Cecil’s supervision, testing his strength, endurance, and speed. Over the past 90 days, his speed has increased by 65%, his endurance by 70%, and his strength by 138%. The science team is developing more challenging exercises in preparation for the eventual confrontation with the Viltrumites.

Invincible battles Multi-Paul

Invincible fights Multi-Paul.

With a looming threat, Rex and Mark confront criminals at the Archive Building who are attempting to steal the Declaration of Independence. During the encounter, Rex is initially overwhelmed by Multi-Paul until Mark intervenes. In the aftermath, Paul expresses dissatisfaction over Kate’s death—a matter further complicated by her unexpected reappearance, as she had temporarily withdrawn while retaining a “copy for safekeeping” and has since become engaged. Consequently, Multi-Paul is arrested, and a reunion occurs at headquarters with Rae reconnecting with Rex.

Meanwhile, Oliver begins to exhibit emerging powers amid a series of related incidents across America, though Donald has not yet identified a definitive connection between these events.

Mark also faces challenges in managing his relationship with Eve. Despite advice from Rick to avoid mentioning “Other Eve,” Mark, determined to maintain integrity and avoid repeating past mistakes, brings up the subject—resulting in an awkward outcome.

Cecil grows frustrated that Debbie has not informed him about Oliver’s newfound abilities and insists on testing him. Although Debbie objects given Oliver’s youth, she ultimately agrees to allow him to begin training after he considers leaving to embrace his destiny.

The situation escalates when Doc Seismic, who has been covertly monitoring Earth’s vibrations, captures the heroes using spider-like minions. Initially, Eve and Mark remain free, but they are eventually captured during their rescue attempt. Cecil and his team then deploy their trump card, Darkwing Two, whose intervention using his ReAnimen subdues Doc Seismic and frees the captives. Mark, angered by Darkwing Two’s collaboration with Cecil, confronts him directly.

Finally, following the psychological training provided under D.A. Sinclair’s guidance, Cecil is confident that the team is on the path to recovery. In a moment of anger, Mark follows Cecil into the White Room, where they encounter a group of ReAnimen.

Trivia[]

YoureNotLaughingNowComics

"You're not laughing now, are you?!" - Doc Seismic, Invincible #48.

  • The title of this episode is in reference to Invincible #48, where Doc Seismic gloats his victory over the heroes that he's captured.
  • Mark gets injured by one of the creatures during his battle with Seismic which leaves a wound on his chest. This injury would shrink overtime during the episode, showing his extremely rapid healing factor. By the next episode this wound was completely healed.
  • Oliver trying to leave home is similar to when Goten and Trunks tried to leave with the Z Fighters to help fight Goku Black, but are found out by their parents: Bulma and Chichi in Dragon Ball Super.
  • Stock footage when Mark was flying fast from I Thought You Were Stronger was used.

Comic Differences[]

  • This episode adapts storylines from Issues 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, and 49.
  • Before his siege on America, Doc Seismic monologued in his cell about how he had been treated as a joke with a few security guards remarking on his bizarre speech.
  • There were a few panels showing perspectives of all the heroes fighting against Seismic's creatures, most of these were showing multiple characters from other Image characters such as Savage Dragon.
    • Most of these characters that showed up in this issue would later make their first appearance during What Have I Done?
  • Rex Splode aided in the fight against Seismic's creatures along with the rest of the Guardians of the Globe and was thus captured with his clothes on.
  • After Invincible punches Darkwing II, Savage Dragon tries to calm him down as Cecil arrives at the scene.
  • While Cecil and Mark argue, Sinclair walks in their conversation which enrages Mark
  • Mark asks Cecil why he brought him to the white room to which he responds with "For the Element of Surprise" and his ReAnimen emerges unlike the show where Cecil remarks that he's in the room for protection from Invincible.
